About the museum
Valga Museum has been housed in the Säde House since 1957. The building was constructed in 1911 to the design of Georg Hellat (1870–1943), the first professional Estonian architect, for the Estonian cultural society Valga Seltskondlik Ühendus “Säde” (founded 1902). From 1911 to 1948 the Säde theatre operated in the house, and it also contained a hotel, banks, shops, a restaurant, society rooms and a 600-seat hall. The building suffered fires in 1920, 1948 and 1988 but has survived; the last renovation took place in 1999. The Valga branch of the National Archives is in the second wing of the house.
The permanent exhibition presents the history and development of Valga as a railway junction, the story of the Orthodox churches, the deportations, the silver collection, and well-known people from Valga, among them Johannes Märtson, Marta Pärn and Alfred Neuland. Some ten exhibitions are held in the gallery each year.
