About the museum
The Sõrve muuseum (Sõrve Museum) is located at the tip of the Sõrve spit, in Sääre village, in the former Sääre border guard cordon. The museum was created to preserve and present the local historical heritage; it opened in 2010 on the basis of the exhibits of the Sääre history room. The exhibition covers nature, history and the military exhibits connected with the places.
In the Soviet era, Saaremaa was the western border of the USSR. Border guard units were permanently stationed here, and access to the area from the mainland was strictly restricted. The museum displays equipment used by the border guards and objects from wartime. Many objects from the wars have been found in the Sõrve forests and brought to the museum and its yard; for example, a stone school desk and parts of the wreck of a Swedish ship can be seen, as well as various weapons.
For those interested in military history, it is possible to take an excursion that introduces the military past of Sõrve and the Stebel coastal defence battery, which was regarded as one of the most modern during the Second World War.
