About the museum
The antler collection gathered by Edgars Hausmanis at “Purvziedi” in Vaide comprises about 600 antlers, of which 337 are elk and 127 deer antlers. Apart from a few roe deer antlers, the exhibits are not hunting trophies – they were found during the work of a forester and later an environmental protection inspector in the Slītere reserve, since 2000 Slītere National Park, in the forests of Kolkasrags. The first elk antlers were found in the mid-1960s.
Construction of the attic floor began in 1972 and it was extended in several stages, which is why the room is patchy. Initially the collection was not intended for public viewing, because during the Soviet period this border zone was not accessible to tourists. In addition to the antlers, there are two unique antler chairs, an antler chandelier, a capercaillie and bird taxidermy, and a separate section with 122 elk antlers that were burned in the large forest fire of 1992, as well as various wooden growths.
