About the museum

The Peipsiveere Samovarimaja is a small museum in the Old Believer village of Varnja, which opens the door to the world of samovars and the tea culture of the Peipsi shore. The private collection, gathered over decades, comprises more than 200 samovars of very different kinds, from simple tinplate samovars to rare examples with rich engravings, which reflect the skills and traditions of masters of different eras.

The exhibition is in an authentic Old Believer dwelling. In the guided talks the origins of the samovars, their making techniques, ways of use, different shapes and the traditions of tea drinking in the lakeside communities are explained.

Every guest can taste authentic samovar tea and the famous ivantšai (Ivan tea), and try the traditional boiled sugar served with the tea, which is an integral part of Old Believer tea culture. On request you can also look at handmade samovar accessories and hear the stories of the hostess of Mesi Tare about how the tea is prepared, served and stored.
