About the museum
Alatskivi Manor passed to the Nolcken family in 1843, when Countess Sophie von Stackelberg married Ernst Friedrich von Nolcken, baron of Luunja. Their elder son, Arved Georg von Nolcken, had a representative residence built for Alatskivi to his own designs – the present Alatskivi Castle. Preparatory work for the construction began in 1876, and the building was supported both by the Nolcken family and by the Loewenstern family, to which Arved’s wife belonged. In the 19th century the manor complex included 57 buildings and objects, of which 41 still stand today.
The castle houses the Eduard Tubin Museum, completed in spring 2011 in cooperation between Alatskivi rural municipality and the Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum (Estonian Theatre and Music Museum). The display gives an overview of the life and work of the composer Eduard Tubin, presents the musicians of the Tartu school and shows Tubin’s manuscripts, recordings, books, and the films and photographs he made himself. Lectures and concerts take place in the chamber hall.
In the former carriage-horse stable there is an exhibition stable that gives an overview of manor life in the Nolcken period. In the castle cellar a ceramics studio operates, where you can also make clay works. The castle also has a restaurant and suites.
