About the museum
The Juhan Liivi museum is located in the village of Rupsi in Peipsiääre rural municipality, Tartu County, 36 km from Tartu and 4 km from Alatskivi. The museum presents the life and work of one of Estonia’s most beloved poets, Juhan Liivi, and the history of the surroundings of his home village. On the three-hectare site there are three main buildings: the main house (ticket sales and the Kodavere permanent exhibition), the exhibition house (a permanent exhibition on two floors and a room for temporary exhibitions) and the barn house (rehemaja).
The permanent exhibitions “Vaimulained / vaimupained” and “Oleksin ma luuletaja” (I Would Have Been a Poet) take visitors into the writer’s life and work and show his significance in Estonian cultural history, including his mental state. The permanent exhibition “Kodavere – hää mürakas kihelkonda” gives an overview of the historic Kodavere parish, whose boundaries extended from the Emajõgi river in the south to the Omedu river in the north.
The outdoor exhibition “Juhan Liivi meelemaastikud” (Juhan Liivi’s Mind Landscapes) can be visited even when the museum houses are closed. It includes the Oja farm, the home of Juhan Liivi.
