About the museum

The Heliloojate Kappide majamuuseum (House Museum of the Kapp Composers) was founded in Suure-Jaani in 1971 as a branch of the Viljandi local history museum. The house was built by Hans Kapp in 1926–1929, and Villem Kapp lived here from 1938. In 1973 the house was thoroughly renovated and a memorial plaque to Villem Kapp was placed on the wall.

Since 1996 the museum has been owned by the local government; from 2012 it belonged to the Suure-Jaani culture house, and since 1 September 2022 it has been part of the Põhja-Sakala Cultural Centre. On the ground floor there is an exhibition room, a hall, a bedroom and a music room, designed from the former dining room, where Eugen Kapp’s grand piano stands. The music room opened in 1998, and the opening events of the Suure-Jaani Music Festival are held here. Most of the furniture comes from Hans Kapp, and some from Joosep Kapp.

Permanent exhibition

• Heliloojate Kappide püsiekspositsioon – The exhibition presents the life and work of the Kapp family of composers in the house where they lived; the music room has Eugen Kapp’s grand piano.
