Askolan kotiseutumuseo

Askola Local Heritage Museum is housed in an old grain warehouse beside the church and presents Stone Age archaeology and the history of Askola as a “bread parish”.

Opening hours

About the museum

Askola is one of the oldest settlements in Finland: the first people came to the area along the seashore some 10,000 years ago. The local heritage museum holds a rich and varied Stone Age archaeological collection.

Askola is also known as a “bread parish” (leipäpitäjä), since rye bread was the parish’s most important product for sale from the late 19th century onwards. The exhibition shows the path of bread from sowing the grain to selling the loaves at the market. Alongside agricultural equipment, it displays old means of transport such as horse carts and sledges, as well as a wooden bicycle that was a “people’s bicycle” (kansanpyörä) in the early 20th century and is one of the museum’s treasures.

The museum is located right beside Askola church, in an old grain warehouse. It is maintained by Askola-seura ry, and the museum can also be explored virtually via a mobile guide.
