About the museum
The Prestbackan maatila- ja apteekkikokoelma (Prestbacka Farm and Pharmacy Collection) is located in the village of Huuvari-Särkijärvi in Askola, in the yard of the Prestbacka manor. The farm collection is displayed in a stone cowshed built in 1901. It holds a large collection of horse-drawn implements and tractor-drawn working machines, for example a horse-drawn manure spreader made by the village smith, which served as the model for spreaders still in use today.
Old satapiikit (hundred-tine harrows), wooden ploughs, sledges and carts are displayed in the condition in which their owners and users left them: they have not been restored or polished. The collection also includes numerous household furnishings and small objects, tools and vessels.
The pharmacy collection is based on Askola’s first pharmacy, which the pharmacist Lasse Wallasvaara founded in 1949. It includes pharmacy furnishings and objects, pharmacy bottles and jars, and the tools with which medicines were once made in the back room of the pharmacy. The main building of Prestbacka manor was built in the late Empire style of the 1840s and is protected under the Building Protection Act.
