About the museum

The Hämeenlinnan taidemuseo opened to the public on 24 May 1952. The foundation of its collections is the artworks evacuated from the Viipurin taidemuseo (Viipuri Art Museum) during the Second World War. The collection has grown through donations and acquisitions, and it now has more than 8,000 works, forming a cross-section of Finnish visual art from the 19th century to contemporary art.

The museum operates in two buildings in the Verkatehdas area. The Engel building is a former state grain warehouse designed by C. L. Engel in 1837, and the Lohrmann building is a former grain store designed by E. B. Lohrmann. The Lohrmann building houses the modern art collection of the Henna ja Pertti Niemistön taidesäätiö (Henna and Pertti Niemistö Art Foundation).

Among the highlights of the collection are Albert Edelfelt’s Larin Paraske, Eero Järnefelt’s Heinäkuun päivä (A Day in July) and Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s Väinämöisen lähtö (The Departure of Väinämöinen). The works are shown in rotation, depending on the exhibition. The museum also presents older Finnish and foreign art, and new directions in contemporary art.
