About the museum
Museo Skogster opened in June 2016, when the main exhibition spaces of the Hämeenlinna City Museum moved from Hämeen linna (Häme Castle) to the city centre. The museum is housed in the former Skogster department store on Raatihuoneenkatu and is the main site of the city museum.
On the ground floor are ticket sales, the museum shop, a reference library and an exhibition space. The museum presents the past and present of Kanta-Häme and holds three changing exhibitions every year.
On the first floor (the second floor in Finnish numbering) is the Säästöpankkimuseo (Savings Bank Museum), founded in 1972; it is the oldest national savings bank museum in the Nordic countries. Its collections are owned by the Säästöpankkien tutkimussäätiö (Savings Banks Research Foundation). The permanent exhibition, set in the atmosphere of a 1920s bank hall, tells the history of banking, and visitors can play the Säästöpankkipeli (Savings Bank Game), which teaches the value of money in different eras. With a museum ticket you can visit all the Skogster exhibitions.
