About the museum
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) was born in Hämeenlinna and lived in the town for the first 20 years of his life. The birth home is the only one of the five houses in Hämeenlinna in which he lived, and it has operated as a museum since 5 December 1965. The wooden house was completed in 1834, and over the decades it housed, among other things, a pharmacy, a doctor's surgery and shops. The Sibelius family rented the house during Janne's early childhood.
The building was extensively renovated in 2007 to be as close as possible to the home it was in Sibelius's early childhood in the 1860s. The museum contains original objects of the composer and his family, such as letters, drawings, a travelling piano and handicrafts, and the rooms are furnished in the style of the 1860s–1880s.
In spring 2025 the museum was closed for an exhibition renewal. The renewed exhibition focuses on the composer's childhood and youth, his relationship with nature and Hämeenlinna as it was in his youth. Chamber concerts are also held in the museum's premises, with an audience capacity of 35 people.
