About the museum
The Halsua local heritage museum area was never formally founded; it grew gradually. Antti Kujala, regarded as the founder of the museum area, bought the so-called Kraatarintupa and the storehouse belonging to it in 1986. Old buildings and objects began to gather on the site, and within a few years Kujala had collected almost all the objects that are now in the museum buildings.
In 1987 the municipality of Halsua bought a plot of land from a neighbouring farm so that a museum barn could be built for the old objects. The municipality’s local heritage and culture board then ordered from the Pohjanmaan museo (Ostrobothnia Museum) a plan for a larger museum complex.
Today the museum area’s two farmyards present the development of peasant tradition from the 18th century onwards. The main building, Palola cottage, dates from the 1890s, and granaries, a threshing barn, a smithy, a smoke sauna and a windmill have been moved to the area from different parts of Ostrobothnia. Among the area’s original buildings is the Kraatarintupa, built in the 1820s.
