About the museum

The Perhon kotiseutumuseo is located in a former grain storehouse beside the church in the church village of Perho. The building was erected by the Kinnunen brothers in 1858 as a loan granary for the farmers’ needs, at a time when seed grain was in short supply and frost had destroyed the harvest on the Suomenselkä ridge. The two-storey building, measuring eight by eight metres, is built of hewn logs. Its double walls and grain bins demonstrate the builders’ professional skill. Outside it has board cladding and a pärekatto (shingle) roof.

The Perhon kotiseutuyhdistys (Perho Local Heritage Association) bought the building from the manttaalikunta (rural municipality) of the village in 1960. The association had become active in the 1960s, and its members had already gathered a large amount of farming objects from Perho for the museum rooms. The storehouse first opened to the public as a museum on 14 July 1963. In June 2022 the building received a new coat of paint in cooperation with a local company and the National Board of Antiquities (Museovirasto).

The collection contains a little over 700 catalogued objects, many of them donated by people from the area. The storehouse itself, in its original form, also creates the atmosphere of old-time farming life. A special story on display concerns the 1930 Jylhänjärvi air crash, from which objects are shown. The work of the local heritage association and the municipality, as well as volunteer work, has kept the museum going, and the museum has offered summer job opportunities to local young people.
