About the museum
The Suksitehdasmuseo was founded in the 1990s in the former premises of the Männikkö ski factory, in the courtyard of the Pesäpallomuseo (Finnish baseball museum). It is possibly the only ski factory museum in the country. The building is owned by Vimpeli municipality, and the collections are looked after by the Vimpeli society (Vimpeli-seura ry).
During the war, a large part of the army’s skis were made in Vimpeli. Ski production in the municipality ended in 1983, and the factory’s machines and equipment are original and still in their former places. Visitors can see how skis used to be made by hand with precise craftsmanship. The collection includes more than 500 museum objects, as well as photographs of ski making, transport and the war years.
Every July the Vimpeli society organises the traditional Museolla soi event at the museum, featuring local and visiting musicians.
