About the museum
The Hangon museo was founded in 1909 and has operated in several different places during its history. In May 1907 the town bought the Fohlin cottage on Korkeavuorenkatu, the only building in the Hanko fortress area to survive the fire of the Crimean War; the cottage became the museum's first premises. The museum's founder was Conrad Appelgren, and its activities were run by the Hangon kotiseutuyhdistys (Hanko Local Heritage Society).
Hanko was evacuated in March 1940, and the museum's collections were taken to the town hall of Ekenäs and in part to Turku. After the war a new era began in the museum's history, and the museum got new premises in the town hall.
The Manner factory property has served as the museum since 2024. The Hangon museo operates in the old factory premises of the Manner mechanical workshop at Pitkäkatu 17. The permanent exhibition Missä maa ja meri kohtaavat tells the history of Hanko, and the museum also has a children's room, furnished inspired by the art of Irmelin Sandman Lilius.
