About the museum
Bunker Irma 302 is part of the Harparskog line, a defensive line about 40 kilometres long built during the interim peace (välirauha). The line includes more than 40 reinforced-concrete dugouts or bunkers and a stone tank barrier about five kilometres long. The line was built at the same time as the Salpa Line in the east, and its purpose was to prevent a possible attack from the Soviet base at Hanko into the interior and towards the Finnish capital.
Irma is the gem of the line, and the Hankoniemen Rintamamuseo has restored it to its original condition. The bunker's walls and roof are as much as two and a half metres thick, and up to twenty soldiers could stay in the space at one time. Most of the interior is original equipment: the ventilation system, a wood stove, bunk beds, a machine gun and a 45 mm anti-tank gun. A few dozen metres away rises a tank barrier built of stone boulders.
The bunker museum is about five kilometres from the Front Museum in the direction of Tammisaari. A visit gives a realistic impression of life at the front during the war years, and under the guidance of an expert the tour comes to life with sound effects and artificial smoke.
