About the museum
The history of ski-themed exhibitions in Lahti goes back to 1926, when the town held its first ski exhibition. The veterans' section of Lahden Hiihtoseura proposed founding a ski museum in 1959, and the museum became part of the Lahti City Museum in 1974. Its own museum building was completed at the Lahti sports centre in 1989.
The building, designed by architect Esko Hämäläinen, received a wooden façade and an extension in 2000, and the premises were renovated in 2016. The basic exhibition and the activity section were completely renewed in 2017.
The museum is located in the area of the Salpausselkä ski stadium, which the Museovirasto (Finnish Heritage Agency) lists among nationally significant built cultural environments. The basic exhibition Hiihdon henkeä deals with skiing from everyday exercise to professional sport, and the exhibition Sisulla sankariksi presents the golden age of Finnish competitive skiing.
