About the museum
The Sotilaslääketieteen museo (Military Medicine Museum) operates in the former headquarters building of the red-brick Hennala barracks site in Lahti, completed in 1913. The Imperial Russian Army built the site in the early 1910s, and after independence it became a Finnish garrison. In spring 1918, during the Civil War, a Red prisoner-of-war camp was set up in Hennala.
The museum’s exhibition spaces, more than 600 square metres, are on two floors. The exhibition follows the journey of the wounded from first aid to transport, field hospitals and rehabilitation, and presents the medical services of the Winter War and the Continuation War. On display are medical equipment, field hospital kit and accounts of the work of medical staff.
The museum also covers the history of the Hennala barracks site, the events in Lahti in 1918 and present-day military medicine. A guided 360-degree virtual tour is available on the museum’s website.
