About the museum
The Iin kotiseutumuseo is located in a central spot in Iin Wanha Hamina, beside the church. The museum area consists of several buildings: an old parish granary, the museum hall, a storehouse (aitta) and the lodging building for log drivers, which houses the Huilinki museum café. The museum tells of life in Ii from prehistory to the present day, and its exhibitions have been renewed in recent years.
The renewed basic exhibition in the old granary presents the history of Ii and objects related to farming and craftsmanship. The museum hall houses a fishing and farming exhibition, and the storehouse has a log-drive exhibition renewed in 2021. In the Huilinki building, which originally served as lodging for log drivers, visitors can see the furnishings of a log-driving hut and a room themed on Old Hamina. In the museum yard there are a kelu boat, a pato boat and a church boat (kirkkovene).
The exhibitions introduce visitors to an Iron Age village and to early industrial history through the peculiar glassworks owner Hourooti. Children can try being an archaeologist. A kepparirata (a children’s play course) is available to everyone in the yard. In summer, events are held at the museum, such as a museum day during Ii Local Heritage Week in July.
