About the museum
The Pateniemen sahan museo (Pateniemi Sawmill Museum) operates in a ship-shed storehouse from the 1850s, known as the Nikkaripirtti. The museum opened in summer 1989, when Veitsiluoto Oy donated the building to the City of Oulu, and it then passed into the ownership of the Oulu Museum.
Oulu merchants founded a shipyard in Kello village in Haukipudas, where wooden warships were built for the Russian army. When the army switched to metal ships, the yard began building merchant ships, and in 1873 a steam sawmill was founded in connection with the yard. The last sailing ship built at Pateniemi, the Felix, was completed in 1874. A new sawmill was completed in 1908 and was in use until 1990; Pateniemi was incorporated into the City of Oulu in 1965.
The museum displays a wide range of objects from both the shipyard and the sawmill eras, and during the visit one can watch a film about the history of the sawmill. The museum is a specialist museum under the Oulu Museum and has its own collection.
