About the museum

Gammelgården was founded in 1936 in connection with Ingå municipality’s 600th anniversary and is the municipality’s local heritage museum. The museum area today consists of over 20 buildings that have been moved here from Ingå and Degerby, most of them erected with voluntary labour. Each building and each object has its own history and shows how the farms functioned in earlier times, in a subsistence economy.

The first building was the windmill, donated by the rusthåll tenant Erik Westerholm and moved from Svartbäck rusthåll in 1937. The main farmhouse, a two-room house from 1772, was moved in 1938 from Ill farm in Illa village across the ice from Fagervik and donated by the owners of Fagervik manor. The main house divides the area into a main courtyard (mangård) and a barn yard (ladugård), and this is where most of the catalogued objects are found.

The area also includes, among other things, a boathouse (sjöbod), stocklider, a loft storehouse (loftbod), a smithy and a herb garden with about thirty herbs and medicinal plants. Ingå Museum and Local Heritage Association, founded in 2004, runs the museum together with the municipality and organises, among other things, guided tours on Ingådagen (Ingå Day) and Hantverkardagen (Crafts Day), as well as midsummer celebrations and a Christmas market on the grounds.
