About the museum
The Mustio manor is first mentioned in the 1350s as a noble manor, and the ironworks in the area passed to the Crown in 1555. The manor and the ironworks changed hands several times before the Linder family acquired Mustio in 1766, when Magnus Linder married the daughter of von Glan. The family owned the manor until 1936.
The present main building was built by Magnus Linder the Younger in 1783–1792. It was designed by Erik Palmstedt and Christoffer Friedrich Schröder, and its architecture moves from rococo to neoclassicism. The interior is Gustavian. The King's Room (Kuninkaan huone) is associated with Gustav III as well as the emperors Alexander I and Alexander II. Hjalmar Linder's time at the beginning of the 20th century was the manor's golden age: he owned about 64,000 hectares of land and bought one of Finland's first cars in 1902. Visitors included Jean Sibelius and Louis Sparre, among others. Hjalmar Linder went bankrupt in 1918.
The manor returned to the Linder family in 1985, when Magnus Linder bought it. After extensive restoration work, the manor opened to the public from the late 1980s. Today Mustion Linna houses a museum, a restaurant and a hotel. The museum can only be visited during the guided Castle Tours. The manor's English-style park is one of Finland's largest private parks and is open all year round.
