About the museum

The house was built in 1827 as a plastered log building and was called the Oppmann house. J. V. Snellman lived in the house from 1845 to 1849, during his Kuopio years. At that time he was headmaster of the Kuopio upper elementary school from 1843 to 1849, and he edited the Finnish-language Maamiehen Ystävä and the Swedish-language newspaper Saima.

The house was restored in 1981. The house museum displays the Snellman family's home with its furniture and objects, and it also tells of everyday life in an upper-class family of the 19th century. The museum is run by the Kuopion korttelimuseo (Kuopio Block Museum).

Admission & discounts

Student groups enter free. A short general guided tour in Finnish for Kuopio daycare centres, schools and other groups of compulsory school age is free; for corresponding groups from other municipalities it costs €40.
