About the museum
The decision to create the block museum was made in 1972, and it opened to the public in 1982. Until 1990 the museum was called the Kuopion ulkomuseo (Kuopio Open-Air Museum). The museum area has eleven buildings, three of which stand on their original sites. The wooden blocks belong to a nationally significant built cultural environment that includes Kuopio's Snellmanin puisto (Snellman Park), the cathedral and the wooden blocks.
The museum homes and workshops show the everyday life of Kuopio's residents from the late 18th century to the 1930s. The sites include a burgher home, a weaver's room and a tailor's workshop, the Minna Canth salon, a pharmacy, a 1930s home, a cobbler's workshop and a stove room, as well as the courtyard. The Apteekkimuseo (Pharmacy Museum) opened in 1992. The museum is run by the City of Kuopio museums.
