About the museum
The art museum operates in a Jugend-style building completed in 1904 as the bank building of the Kansallis-Osake-Pankki (National Joint-Stock Bank), designed by architect Vilho Penttilä. Architect Kauno S. Kallio extended the building in 1924–1925, when the corner tower was demolished and the interiors were renovated in the classicist style of the 1920s. In 1958 architect K. A. Pinomaa designed a new entrance and the shop-window facade.
Banking operations in the building ended in 1977, and the City of Kuopio bought the building. The art museum opened here on 25 April 1980. The building was renovated in 2003–2004 under the direction of chief designer Eero Koivisto, and a glass-walled staircase hall was built on the courtyard side.
The museum’s collection has just over 8,000 works, mainly of Finnish art. It includes, among others, the museum’s own collection, the City of Kuopio collection, the Leonardo Da Vilhu collection, the Osk. Huttunen collection, the Pekka Halonen collection and the collection of the Kuopio Friends of Nature Association. Artists represented include the von Wright brothers, Pekka Halonen, Albert Edelfelt, Eero Järnefelt, Ellen Thesleff and Juho Rissanen.
