About the museum
Tarmo is a steam-powered icebreaker built in 1907, which kept winter sea routes open. It took part in both the First and the Second World War, and in the port of Kotka the ship was the target of bombing. In the 1930s Tarmo rescued 230 fishermen and 125 horses from a drifting ice floe.
After its service the ship was turned into a museum ship. Today it lies at the quay of Merikeskus Vellamo in Kotka’s Kantasatama (Central Harbour), and in summer visitors can go from the bridge to the engine room. There are guides on board, and guided tours are held in the summer season.
A 360-degree virtual tour of Tarmo has been made, and a group guided tour of the icebreaker can also be ordered.
