About the museum
Lennart Rekonen began collecting museum objects in the 1940s, and museum activity began on Kaunissaari in the 1960s under Veli-Pekka Rekonen. The known settlement history of Kaunissaari begins in the 13th century, and settlement peaked in the 1850s, when about 300 people lived on the island. Old livelihoods have included fishing, seal hunting, freight sailing and pilotage. Cataloguing of the objects began in 2017.
