About the museum
The Karhula Aviation Club was founded in 1945 and maintains the tradition of Hävittäjälentolaivue 34 (Fighter Squadron 34), which operated at Kymi during the war years. The Kymi field was built in 1942–43 for a squadron that flew Messerschmitt Bf 109 aircraft. The club’s first elementary glider, the Harakka I, was recovered in 1959.
The actual museum activity began in August 1992, when the Air Force handed over a Fouga CM 170 Magister FM-43 jet trainer to the club. The present museum hangar was completed in autumn 1995, and an extension was completed for the 2008 operating season.
The museum’s collection includes the elementary gliders Harakka I, II and III, sailplanes such as the Bocian, PIK-5c, K-8b, Ka-6CR and Utu, and military aircraft such as the Focke-Wulf Stieglitz, Gloster Gauntlet, Folland Gnat, Fouga Magister, MiG-21F-13, MiG-21BIS and Saab Draken. In addition, a light helicopter and a Moottoriharakka are on display. The museum also runs restoration projects and an art gallery.
