About the museum
Russian Emperor Alexander III first fished at Langinkoski in the summer of 1880. In 1887 he and Empress Maria Fjodorovna decided to build a fishing lodge on the riverbank, and it was consecrated for use on 15 July 1889. The two-storey building has kept its original appearance, and much of the interior was made in Finland. The imperial family lived simply at the lodge, and the place was their favourite as a counterweight to the glitter of St Petersburg.
After independence the lodge passed to the Finnish state, but it was not maintained and some of the furniture disappeared. The imperial beds were later found at Kultaranta and returned to Langinkoski in 1956. The Kymenlaakson museoyhdistys (Kymenlaakso Museum Association) set up a museum in the lodge, which opened in 1933. The museum was at first run by the association and later by the Langinkoski Society; today it is run by the Suomen kansallismuseo (Finnish National Museum).
The site also has an old chapel, built by monks of Valamo Monastery about 80 years before the imperial lodge, a fishermen’s cabin dating from 1892, a memorial stone unveiled in 1896 and a summer café established in 1926. There is a fish-farming facility and walking routes in the nature reserve, and the place is still a popular fishing spot. Langinkoski is part of the Kotka National City Park.
