Kalvolan kotiseutumuseo

Local heritage museum in an old grain storehouse beside Kalvola church, open on summer Sundays.

Opening hours unknown

About the museum

The Kalvola municipal culture board founded the local heritage museum in 1968 in the village of Keikkala, in a grain storehouse beside Kalvola church that had been built in the late 1850s. When the municipalities merged, Kalvola was united with the city of Hämeenlinna, and the local heritage association Kalvola-Seura was re-established. The city transferred the museum to the society in 2010, and Kalvola-Seura continues to run it through voluntary work.

The museum displays the fittings of the loan granary in full, without grain. The stone-work section presents, through texts, photographs and tools, the stages of the stone work that was once significant for Kalvola, and a small whetstone section tells of the Finnish whetstone industry. The exhibitions also include church objects, objects from lost churches, and objects from local schooling, as well as objects found most recently with a metal detector in Kalvola’s fields.

Upstairs, the coat of arms of Kalvola is used to show the significance of forest and timber for the parish. A 15-metre series of pictures painted by Valto Kokko, a designer for the Iittala glassworks, runs round the wall; it shows timber being transported along the Häme Härkätie road to Turku. The museum also contains a fully hand-operated sawmill, on which, among other things, the boards and planks of the granary were sawn.
