About the museum
Veturimuseo is a railway-themed special museum located in Toijala in the centre of Akaa. It operates in a red-brick engine shed completed in 1876 opposite Toijala railway station. Toijala was Finland’s first railway traffic point originally intended as a junction station, and in 2026 the line from Hämeenlinna to Tampere and Turku reaches 150 years.
The museum is maintained jointly by the City of Akaa and Museoveturiseura ry (Museum Locomotive Society). The society was founded in 1979 to service and maintain rolling stock retired by the State Railways (Valtionrautatiet); its main task is restoring locomotives. Members of the society restore the equipment through voluntary work all year round.
The collection includes different types of locomotives and track machines, railway safety equipment, scale models and other small railway objects. The locomotives in the basic exhibition come from the State Railways and several industrial plants, and among them are several rarities. All locomotives are broad-gauge locomotives with a track gauge of 1,524 millimetres. In terms of propulsion they are steam locomotives as well as diesel and other motor locomotives. The basic collection is updated every year, and the main exhibition was reopened in renewed form in summer 2026. Occasionally the museum’s operational rolling stock can also be seen in traffic, for example towards Valkeakoski.
