About the museum

The Karvian kotiseutumuseo is located in an old loan storehouse next to Karvia church, which served as a grain store for the less well-off until the early 20th century. The idea for a museum arose when collectors toured the parish looking for old objects. In 1956 the parish’s old objects were surveyed by school district, and Eino Saari gathered them in the upper floor of the storehouse. The storehouse’s three floor levels were converted into exhibition spaces through voluntary work, and the museum opened on 21 July 1957.

The collection includes over 1,700 objects; the oldest are prehistoric Stone Age tools, and the earliest historical objects date from the 17th century. The ground floor displays wooden vessels, textiles, weapons and skis; the upper floor has, among other things, the magical implements of folk healers, woodwork and household tools.

Behind the church, on the old market site, is an open-air museum area with, among others, a former church stable, a smoke cabin (savupirtti), a two-part granary (aitta), a smithy, a threshing barn (riihi), the Lehtinen cottage (Lehtisen tupa) and a kytökämppä (kitchen hut). The open-air museum area can be visited without opening hours.
