About the museum
Hämes-Havunen is a masterpiece of Ostrobothnian peasant building tradition from the 1800s and a building complex designated as nationally valuable built heritage, at the northern end of the Hyypänjoki valley landscape area. The Havunen farm is mentioned in a tax register in 1608, and the Havunen family lived on the farm for seven generations. The original house was destroyed in a fire during the Finnish War in 1808. The present main building was completed in 1827 and the small cottage (pikkutupa) in the 1860s.
The farm's special feature is its two closed yards: the residential buildings and granaries surround the men's yard, and the livestock and farm buildings surround the cattle yard. The main building was inhabited until 1957 and the small cottage until 1963. The City of Kauhajoki bought the farm in 1974, and the buildings were renovated in 1977–1982.
Today Hämes-Havunen serves as a banquet hall, a setting for events and a showcase of Ostrobothnian building heritage. A presentation of the house is offered to groups.
