About the museum
The Keminmaan pitäjämuseo operates on the bank of the Kemijoki along Mikaelintie, in the old parish loan-grain storehouse, which was completed in 1849. In spring 1848 the parish assembly chose the farmer's son Matts Pyttynen as contractor for the two-storey log building; he had submitted the lowest bid, 259 silver roubles. The loan-grain storehouse was kept up by a manttaalikunta founded by the farmers, which stored seed grain for years of poor harvests and handed it out as needed. Old grain racks still remain in the building.
Today the storehouse houses a museum maintained by the Keminmaa-Seura ry (Keminmaa Society). The museum displays everyday and utility objects that illuminate the history of the parish, as well as traditional fishing equipment. Upstairs, the river fishing tradition that disappeared with the damming of the Kemijoki has been recorded: salmon and sea trout were caught in the river, and lampreys were fished at the merros.
Next to the museum is Finland's northernmost granite church, the Pyhän Mikaelin kirkko, built in the 16th century. Keminmaa's new church was completed in 1827. Nearby there is a children's playground, and in the servants' room of the old parsonage there is a summer café.
