About the museum
Alatornion pitäjämuseo is located on Kirkonmäki hill next to Alatornio church, in a two-storey loan-grain storehouse built in the late 1840s. The old storehouse was put to use as a museum in 1964. The town of Tornio is surrounded by a wide rural area that was once the independent municipality of Alatornio. In the Tornio Valley people lived by cattle farming, fishing and agriculture.
The museum’s exhibition contains many everyday and household objects, mostly collected from the villages of Alatornio in the 1960s. The objects tell of life and livelihoods in the area. The museum is run by Tornion kotiseutuseura ry (Tornio Local Heritage Society).
