About the museum
Valmarinniemi lies at the mouth of the Kemijoki in Keminmaa, and the Valmari family has lived on the site since the 1600s. The farm’s main livelihoods were farming, trade and fishing. In the early 1900s the headland was the sorting area of the Kemijoki log drive. Valmarinniemi is also the site of the first church of Kemi parish, and near the museum stood the northernmost mamsellimylly (mamsell mill) in Finland, which ground grain until the 1920s.
The present main building dates from the early 1800s. The house has been furnished in the style of the 1920s and 1930s, when a three-person family lived there: father Edward, mother Maria (née Lassila) and son Arvi. In 1985 Doctor Arvi Valmari sold the family home, with its original objects, to Keminmaa municipality so that it could be made into a museum.
In addition to the main building, the yard includes a barn-cowshed building and a salmon cellar. The yard previously also had an older residential building and three granaries, but they have been moved or demolished. Next to the museum there is a boat launch and a lean-to (laavu).
