About the museum

Kempeleen kotiseutumuseo presents a typical North Ostrobothnian farmyard. The current log main building dates from 1886 and contains a pirtti (main living room), four chambers, a porstua (entrance hall) and two verandas. At the beginning of the century, the Kempeleen Säästöpankki (savings bank) operated in the bank room for about 30 years. The log cowshed was built in 1886, and its interior was renovated in the 1930s. The horse shed (tallipuoji) dates from 1897 and contains a stable, a mangle room, an equipment room and a tractor room.

The building group is part of the same ensemble as the old church, the Junttila farmhouse and the old buildings of a horticultural school. Buildings have been moved to the museum area: an old residential building from Hallituskatu in Oulu, which now houses exhibition space; an asevelitalo moved from Sohjana; an equipment shed and a windmill moved from Tyrnävä; a smokehouse; a fish storehouse (kala-aitta) from 1857 moved from Pikisaari in Oulu; and the Hemmilä storehouse (varastoaitta) from the 1880s.

The turf hut was built in the old style in the early 1980s. Turf huts were part of the Kempele landscape at the turn of the century, and in the Honkanen area they could still be found until the 1950s.
