About the museum
The museum building of Kemppien tupa dates from 1858 and is a parish granary. In good harvest years, grain was stored in such granaries as food and seed grain against years of crop failure, and interest was charged on lent grain, so the granary acted as a kind of bank.
The parish granary of Lemu was handed over to the use of Lemun Kemppien (Kemppi) association in the year it was founded, 1951. The following year the building was restored according to a plan by the architect Ilmari Wirkkala, converted into a local heritage museum and named Kemppien tupa.
The exhibition was renewed in 2021 to suit the whole family. The collection includes about 1,400 catalogued objects, and short personal stories of people who lived and were active in Lemu at different times lead visitors into the history of the place. Upstairs there is an old-fashioned school classroom, and the museum’s storyteller is the jackdaw Selma Annikki, familiar from the Lemu library.
