About the museum

The Vehmaa museums form a museum area along the Great Post Road (Suuri Postitie), which was opened in the 1630s. The sites in the area are run by the Vehmaa local heritage association (Vehmaan kotiseutuyhdistys). The local heritage museum is housed in the 19th-century main building of Huolila farm; its living room is furnished in the peasant style of its time, with long tables.

In the farmyard’s stone cowshed is the Kivityömuseo (stonework museum), which focuses on the stone industry of Vehmaa and presents Vehmaa stonework of the early 20th century. On the other side of the road is the ruotusotamiehen torppa (soldier’s croft). It was built in the 18th century as the dwelling of a ruotu soldier, maintained by ruote no. 121 of the Swedish-Finnish ruote system. The local heritage association restored it and opened it to the public in 1994. The area also has the old pruuttakoppi (hose-drying hut) of the Lahdingon VPK (volunteer fire brigade), with an exhibition on the history of volunteer firefighting.
