About the museum
The Vuokala mill and power plant is located in the centre of Savonranta; the municipality of Savonranta joined Savonlinna at the start of 2009. The first Vuokala mill was established as early as the 1860s, and at the beginning of the 20th century a hydropower plant generating electricity was built alongside it. Savonranta was one of the first electrified rural municipalities in Finland. The present mill building dates from 1937, and the mill's golden age was the 1950s, when four millers worked there and grain was ground day and night.
The mill is owned by the Savonrannan kehittämissäätiö (Savonranta Development Foundation), and opening hours are the responsibility of Savonranta-Seura ry. The mill was renovated in 2001–2003. In the museum visitors can see a very well-preserved milling machinery of wooden construction that is in working condition in practice. The wooden machinery is on four floors, and the grain travels through it on a journey of as much as four kilometres before becoming flour. The mill also hosts art exhibitions.
