About the museum
The Keuruun vanha kirkko was built in 1756–1759 to the plans of Antti Hakola. It is a long, west-towered cross church with short transept arms, and it is regarded as a good example of 18th-century wooden peasant architecture. The church has a panelled ceiling, walls painted in red ochre, and 550 seats. The octagonal spire was added in the early 1830s.
Johan Tilé painted the church's wooden vault decorations and the altarpiece in 1782–1786. The pulpit dates from 1784 and was made by Matti Åkergren. The church also contains paintings by Johan Backman and Carl Gustaf Söderstrand, as well as copies of original works made in the 1930s. The church interior is also shown in Akseli Gallen-Kallela's painting Tyttö Keuruun vanhassa kirkossa (Girl in the Old Church of Keuruu).
