About the museum
The main task of the Petäjäveden radio- ja puhelinmuseo is to preserve the history of Finnish electronic communication. The museum is maintained by the Petäjäveden Viestilaitemuseon Tukiyhdistys ry. The collections contain almost 4,000 catalogued objects and tens of thousands of documents.
The oldest radio on display dates from 1921, the oldest electron tube from 1918 and the oldest telephone from the 1880s. The museum has brand-specific exhibitions on the large Finnish radio manufacturers Asa, Helvar and Salora, as well as on the licensed manufacturer Suomen Philips. In addition, Finnish and foreign military and professional radio production is presented in its own section.
Special items include the suitcase radio stations of the OSS and SIS dating from the occupation of Norway (1940–1944), Soviet paratrooper (desant) radio equipment and long-range patrol radios. More recent espionage equipment is represented by Japanese eavesdropping devices from the 1980s–1990s and Soviet shortwave radio stations from the 1970s–1980s. The museum invests in photographing objects and making the material available online, and information has been published on the arjenhistoria.fi website since 2015.
