About the museum
Koitsanlahti Manor in Parikkala is the only donation-land manor (lahjoitusmaakartano) in today’s Finnish territory. It was originally a crown grain manor (latokartano) founded by King Gustav II Adolf in 1618. In 1652 Koitsanlahti was donated to Field Marshal and Count Arvid Wittenberg, and from 1721 the estate was a donation-land manor of the Russian ruler. The manor tells of the history of the Swedish Great Power era, of donation lands, and of the position of the peasants in the 17th to 19th centuries.
In the yard stands the Kärsimysten kivet (Stones of Suffering) memorial, erected in 1958, and a tree called Piiskuupetäjä (Whipping Pine) tells of the conflicts between peasants and bailiffs. During the independence period the manor, with its surrounding fields, was state-owned, and in the 1940s the main building housed the Parikkala men’s home-industry school. After the Continuation War the manor’s lands were distributed to evacuees.
The manor was opened as a museum in 1966, but it was under the control of the National Board of Antiquities and closed from 1991. In autumn 2016 it was sold to an antiques collector, who furnished the main building with objects from East Finnish manors. The manor is now privately owned, but open days and guided visits are held there in summer.
