About the museum
The Rautjärvi local heritage museum operated from 1978 to 1996 beside Rautjärvi church, in the old parish hall, until the building was closed for repairs. In 1998 it was decided to concentrate all of the municipality's museum activities at the Miettilä reserve barracks area. The local heritage museum was first placed in the old Terveystalo building, where three rooms were renovated for a local heritage exhibition.
In summer 2023 the museum moved to the renovated Komendantti house, the former Kuntala, which now serves as a war history centre and meeting place. The building, completed in 1883, has served as a residence for an official and a district police officer (nimismies), as an office for a military prison, as a municipal office, and as a meeting place for villagers and associations.
The museum's collection comprises about 750 objects and textiles from the farms and households of the municipal area, mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition space presents theme exhibitions drawn from the collection on local history.
