About the museum
Hauho-Seura began its activities in 1948 and immediately started collecting old objects and built heritage. Three museums emerged from the collections: the Hauhon esinemuseo (Hauho object museum), the Kotkon ulkomuseoalue (Kotkon open-air museum area) and the Vihavuoden myllymuseo (Vihavuori mill museum). The open-air museum area is located at Kotkonharju, on the edge of a nature reserve about 300 metres from the church.
The main building of the area is the yard building (piharakennus) of the Halppari farm, brought from the village of Kaukkala, built in the late 18th century. It is furnished to show the home of an enlightened peasant at the turn of the century, and the building has a veranda (veranta), a porstua (entrance hall), a pirtti (main room), the master’s chamber (isännän kamari) and two guest chambers (vieraskamari). The building has not been lived in since it was moved, as it is intended solely as a museum.
The area also has a mamsell-type windmill, moved to the museum area in 1961; the former grain storehouse of the parsonage; a smoke sauna brought from the village of Torvoila; a smallholder’s storehouse; and an outhouse obtained from the parsonage. At the northern end of the yard are the double threshing barns (paririihet), built around 1760, which were bought by Hauho-Seura in 1961 and display tools used in threshing grain. Local heritage festivals have been held in the museum area, especially at Midsummer.
