About the museum
Hauho-Seura ry began its activities in 1948 and immediately started collecting old objects and buildings worth preserving. Premises for the collections were obtained in a former loan granary beside Hauho church, and the museum opened to the public at Midsummer in 1950.
The storehouse was completed in 1818. When large grain stores and developments in transport made the parish loan granaries unnecessary, many of these storehouses were converted into museums. Traces of the battles of 1918 are still visible on the building’s outer wall.
On the ground floor are tools used for threshing, milling and measuring grain, and in making the Häme sahdi, as well as objects related to making bast ropes (niiniköysi) and the machines and tools of a village shoemaker. A small church museum section has been built on the upper floor, containing saint statues removed from the church and the gallery paintings made in 1772 by the ruotusotamies (ruote soldier) Jonas Erik Korler. The paintings depict events from the Bible.
