About the museum
The Koulumuseo Lagstad building is the former teacher's residence of Espoo's first municipal elementary school, Lagstad folkskolan. The school began operating in 1873 and ran until the end of the spring term in 1954, when a new school building was completed nearby. The old school house has been restored to look as it did in the days of the elementary school, and it houses the local heritage house Lagstad hembygdsgård of the Esbo hembygdsförening (Espoo Local Heritage Association).
A school museum was already in Espoo's plans in the 1960s, when school-related objects began to be collected for the museum's collections. Koulumuseo Lagstad opened to the public in 2003 on the upper floor of the old school building, where it operated until 2021. After that, the premises and activities were renewed together with Espoo residents during 2025, and the renewed school museum opened in the former teacher's residence in February 2026.
In the museum, visitors can explore how people in Espoo learned in different times and reminisce about their own school days. Visitors can add to the museum's content with their own memories, and workshops and events are held for the public and for groups.

The school museum is not fully accessible. A portable ramp is available for the outdoor steps, and some thresholds are bevelled, but some doorways are too narrow for an electric wheelchair. The museum building has an accessible WC; there is no induction loop. The yard is level sand and lawn, and in winter snow and ice can make movement difficult. The car park has two accessible spaces, and drop-off traffic can stop in the yard in front of the door.
