About the museum
Lohjan Museo is a cultural history museum operating on the old estate centre of Iso-Pappila near the Pyhän Laurin kirkko (St Lawrence's Church). The museum was founded in 1911. It grew out of the Lohjan Kotiseutututkimuksen Ystävät (Friends of Local History Research in Lohja), founded in 1894 on the initiative of Robert Boldt, which was Finland's first local heritage society. In 1978 the museum passed into the ownership of the City of Lohja and the Municipality of Lohja, and the parish leased the parsonage to it as premises.
The museum grounds comprise 11 buildings in all, some of which are open to the public. Behind the main building is a garden where flowers and useful plants grow in summer, as well as a herb garden. Most of the buildings date from the 1800s, and the old assistant pastor's building houses the museum café. Each year events are held in the area, including the museum's birthday in summer, the Omenakarnevaalit (Apple Carnival) in autumn and the Menneen ajan joulumarkkinat (Christmas Market of Times Past).
The museum's collections include about 25,000 objects and tens of thousands of photographs. The main part of the collections is kept at the joint collection centre of the West Uusimaa vocational museums, Leira, in Ekenäs. The Lohja Museum is also responsible for the Johannes Lohilampi museum in Sammatti, the Paikkarin torppa (Paikkari croft) and the Linderinsali exhibition space in the Lohja main library.
