About the museum
The Siuntio museum is maintained by Hembygdens vänner i Sjundeå rf, a Swedish-language local heritage association founded in 1914, which also publishes literature on Siuntio and cherishes the history and traditions of the area. The museum is located on Pappilantie, and its grounds include several buildings: the Vanha tupa (old house), the main building, barns and the Petroffskan mökki (Petroffska cottage).
The museum’s four exhibitions take visitors through time. ‘Vesireiteistä varhaiskyliin’ (From Waterways to Early Villages) tells of ancient Siuntio from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age, when the area was largely under the sea. ‘Kartanoista kirkonkyläksi’ (From Manors to Church Village) covers the Middle Ages and the early modern period, when manors and the church were the centres of local administration, the economy and spiritual life. ‘Pankista putiikkiin’ (From Bank to Boutique) describes the impact of industrialisation and modernisation on everyday life in the 19th and 20th centuries. ‘Porkkala 1944’ tells of the leasing of the Porkkala area to the Soviet Union as a military base: about a quarter of the municipality’s area was left behind the new border, and nearly 1,400 Siuntio residents were evacuated at short notice.
The museum’s website also has a timeline of Siuntio’s history, beginning with the deed of gift of 1382 and running through the Siuntio church, Finland’s first ironworks and Aleksis Kivi’s Siuntio years to the Porkkala period.
